Transformation of Soviet Psychiatry: From the Branch of Medicine to a Punitive System to Combat Dissent

Abstract

У статті проаналізовано процес трансформації радянської психіатрії з медичної галузі у складову каральної системи, спрямованої на боротьбу з інакодумством. Досліджено механізми використання психіатричних установ для політичних репресій, роль державних структур у формуванні практики примусового лікування та дискредитації опонентів режиму. Показано, що медичні інструменти були інституціоналізовані як засіб контролю над суспільством. Матеріали дослідження ґрунтуються на історичних джерелах і сучасних наукових працях з історії медицини та політики. The article analyzes the transformation of Soviet psychiatry from a medical discipline into a component of the punitive system aimed at combating dissent. It examines the mechanisms of using psychiatric institutions for political repression, the role of state authorities in shaping the practice of compulsory treatment, and the stigmatization of regime opponents. The study demonstrates how medical instruments were institutionalized as tools of social control. The research is based on historical sources and modern studies in the history of medicine and political processes.
