Abstract: Background and Objective. Hormones have potent effects on the major determinants of the developments and functions of oral cavity organs and tissues including gingiva. They can influence the peridontium at different life time. At puberty increased gingival inflammation was positively correlated with an increase in blood estradiol and progesterone, significant gingival inflammatory changes have been registered in association with the menstrual cycle, bleeding and swollen gingival occur during menstruation, pregnancy gingivitis is extremely common. Peridontal glucocorticoid system and its possible role in the periodontum deseases are described, testosterone receptors are found in periodontal tissues and results showed that testosterone may have anti-inflammatory effects on the periodontum. Role of pineal gland-hormone - melatonin in the mentioned processes is not known. In this study we explore the relationship between biomarkers of functional state of gingival tissues and pineal gland functions.
